December Grants Approved

The Real Estate Foundation approved a total of 14 grants totalling $624,005 at the December meetings. The projects are listed below in alphabetical order, by recipient organization.

BC Food Systems Network for public education and capacity building around issues of farmland protection in BC. $10,000

British Columbia Lake Stewardship Society for lake monitoring and education to support stewardship efforts, watershed plans and local bylaws that improve the health of BC lakes. $50,000

Canadian Water Research Society to review lessons on governance of international waters and natural resources from an aboriginal perspective; develop learning materials. $20,000

City of Coquitlam to support the second phase of a collaborative planning process for the Lower Coquitlam River watershed, led by a multi-sector roundtable. $40,000

City of North Vancouver for a pilot program to build capacity and support within the rental building sector for energy retrofitting of multi-unit residential buildings. $30,000

Cowichan Watershed Society for a water governance pilot project to test capacity for more local responsibility and accountability under a new Water Sustainability Act. $200,000

David Suzuki Foundation using scientific data and analysis, engage industry, government and local communities to conserve natural capital in the Peace Break region. $50,000

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society for research intended to inform city land use policy on the role of community gardens in addressing food security and livability in Surrey. $28,775

Lower Similkameen Indian Band to establish the Similkameen Valley Water Board as a pilot for regional water governance. $15,030

Shawnigan Basin Society to develop a ecosystem-based conservation plan for the Shawnigan Lake watershed. $40,000

Small Housing BC Society for research and development of a toolkit on small housing solutions in the Lower Mainland, directed at policy makers and planners. $20,200

Stewardship Centre for British Columbia Society to further develop the shoreline development design and certification program for residential properties along lakeshores and coastlines. $35,000

West Coast Environmental Law for legal analysis on incorporating ecosystem values into land use decisions that support sea level rise resilience in the Lower Mainland. $40,000

Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook to evaluate City-owned land according to the Young Agrarians Land Access Guide in order to create more public garden space and urban farms. $45,000
