Welcome Aboard, Shauna!

The Real Estate Foundation of BC is pleased to announce that Shauna Johnson has joined the Board of Governors. The BC Minister of Finance appointed Shauna to the position.

Shauna is Coast Salish from the Tsawout First Nation on her mother’s side and Tsimshian from Lax Kwʼalaams on her father’s side. She has a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a Master of Science in Indigenous community planning.

“I am excited to be a part of the REFBC Board because I have observed REFBC make great strides towards reconciliation and UNDRIP in the way they provide grants to support First Nations doing great work in their communities. There is so much wisdom that Indigenous Peoples can offer towards sustainable and equitable land management practices and that the rest of the world can learn from. I hope I can help the REFBC Board build relationships even further with First Nations in BC.”

Shauna is a Registered Professional Planner (RPP, MCIP). She has specialized expertise in providing planning support for Indigenous communities to revitalize and promote Indigenous community planning research, methods, and practices grounded firmly within Indigenous laws, legal traditions, and ways of knowing and being. Her experience working with Indigenous communities has been in developing housing strategies; comprehensive community plans; strategic, land use (reserve-based and watershed level-based), environmental management, and marine spatial/use plans; and Indigenous food systems projects.

“Shauna brings valuable experience and expertise in marine and land use planning to the Board of Governors. We’re excited to welcome Shauna to REFBC as we work to support sustainable, equitable, and socially just relationships between lands, waters, and people.”

Mark Gifford, CEO, Real Estate Foundation of BC

In her current role as Marine Use Planner with the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council, Shauna has been working on developing a territory-wide marine and land use plan for two W̱SÁNEĆ Nations (Tsartlip and Tseycum). She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia in the School of Community of Regional Planning’s Indigenous Community Planning (ICP) program — mentoring, supervising, and co-teaching ICP practicum students. Shauna currently sits on the board of Native Land, a website developed to help settlers and others across the globe determine whose land they live and work on.

REFBC is overseen by a seven-member Board of Governors. The Governors are appointed by the Province of BC (3), Union of BC Municipalities (1), BC Real Estate Association (1), Real Estate Institute of BC (1), and BC Non-Profit Housing Association (1).
