New Grants Support Indigenous Planning Students and Housing for Newcomers
At their December 2022 meeting, the Real Estate Foundation of BC’s Board of Governors approved three grants totalling $409,000.
REFBC grants support law and policy reform, applied research, community engagement, and professional and public education to advance sustainable, equitable, and socially just land use and real estate practices across BC.
In our work, we are committed to upholding and advancing implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It is important for us to prioritize projects that support justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Including these latest grants, REFBC has awarded more than $100 million to non-profit organizations working to strengthen BC communities and protect our shared land and water.
The Winter 2022 grants are listed alphabetically by recipient organization below.
The Black + Indigenous Design Collective will pilot a mentorship program to support young people from the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations in pursuing postsecondary education and career opportunities in urban design and planning and, ultimately, Indigenizing the city. ($144,000)
The Immigrant Services Society of BC will pilot the use of home-sharing software to facilitate the process of housing displaced Ukrainians with homeowners in the Lower Mainland. ($40,000)
The School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia will develop and implement a strategy to increase the enrollment of Indigenous students in the Indigenous Community Planning Program. ($225,000)
