New grants fund work in housing, green buildings, active transportation, and sustainable land use

The Real Estate Foundation of BC’s Board of Governors approved 10 grants at the Foundation’s December 2016 grants meeting, totaling $901,750. To date, REFBC has awarded more than $75 million in grants to support sustainable land use projects in communities across BC.

December 2016 grants are listed in alphabetical order below, by grantee.

Aboriginal Housing Management Association – to design, develop, pilot and launch a housing portfolio planning tool to support off-reserve Aboriginal non-profit housing providers. ($105,000)

Affordable Housing Education Awareness and Development (AHEAD) – to assist with the 2017 Metro Vancouver Homeless Count, and to improve the reliability and relevance of the findings. ($20,000)

BC Cycling Coalition – for a provincial active transportation strategy and leadership council that will work to address barriers (particularly in rural communities) to walking and cycling for daily trips. ($120,000)

City of Vancouver – for a centre of excellence that connects developers, designers and builders to share knowledge and practices for developing zero-emissions buildings. ($225,000)

Comox Valley Land Trust – for a “tool box” of four initiatives – conservation incentives, regulatory tools, watershed protection, and green asset management – to address gaps in land use planning in the Comox Valley. ($150,000)

Green Bricks Education Society – for delivery of a workshop on water and the built environment to Grade 4 students in the Lower Mainland, Abbotsford/Mission and the Okanagan. ($27,450)

Lil’wat Nation – to develop a framework and pilot project that allows landowners to accept payments for protecting ecosystem services that support food security for the Lílwat Nation. ̓($34,850)

Mitacs Inc. – to develop a web-based mapping tool and a standardized submission process to enable First Nations communities to manage, review, and respond to referrals to develop natural resources. ($47,500)

Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council – to develop and publish a community-based Land Use Planning (LUP) Handbook to support First Nations land governance and planning. ($50,000)

New Market Funds Society – to launch a social purpose real estate development model that supports re-development and renewal of non-profit affordable rental housing in BC and Canada. ($70,000)

West Kootenay EcoSociety – to build public support and educate decision-makers to transition a municipality to sustainable infrastructure, energy efficiency and 100% renewable energy by 2050. ($51,950)
