Indigenizing Planning, Decolonizing Land Use

Watch the 2024 BC Land Summit’s opening keynote and learn about UNDRIP

In May, the 2024 BC Land Summit brought hundreds of land use professionals together in Nanaimo.

For the opening keynote, a panel of Indigenous thought leaders shared their perspectives on how Indigenizing and decolonizing land-use planning promises to benefit us all.

Jessie Hemphill, CEO of Sa̱nala Planning, gave a presentation on “Wisdom From Pre-Contact Indigenous Planning.”

Ginger Gosnell-Myers, Indigenous Fellow at Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, tackled a timely question: “What is the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)?”

Tara Marsden/Naxginkw, founder of Hlimoo Sustainable Solutions and UNDRIP Fellow at the Real Estate Foundation of BC (REFBC), moderated the panel.

As the summit began, the speakers invited participants to think about their role as a practitioner, organization, and sector in advancing UNDRIP.

REFBC was the presenting partner for the 2024 BC Land Summit, and we were happy to help organize the opening keynote, titled “Indigenizing Planning, Decolonizing Land Use.”

The BC Land Summit Society, which puts on the quinquennial conference, is composed of five member organizations: the BC Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada, BC Institute of Agrologists, BC Society of Landscape Architects, Planning Institute of BC, and Real Estate Institute of BC.
